Your first weeks abroad: settling in with confidence
Practical steps for arrival, wellbeing and building a support network in a new country.
Arriving in a new country is exciting and, at times, overwhelming. A little preparation makes the first weeks much smoother.
Before you fly
Confirm accommodation, arrival dates and any airport pick-up. Keep digital and paper copies of key documents in your hand luggage. Check your university’s orientation timetable.
Your first week
- Complete university registration and any required immigration steps promptly.
- Open a local bank account and arrange a local phone number.
- Register with a doctor or health service where applicable.
- Learn your route to campus before teaching starts.
Look after yourself
Homesickness is normal. Keep regular contact with family, but also say yes to orientation events, societies and study groups. Most universities offer free, confidential wellbeing support. Use it early rather than late.
Work and study balance
If your visa allows part-time work, check the exact hour limits and conditions on the official government website. Your studies come first.
